The Sci Fi Channel becomes Syfy with their rebranding and redesign. TVWeek has a full write up on the (supposed) move away from geekdom here. As the science fiction genre continues to expand we have to wonder if the content supercedes the brand.
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular.”
Press release here. (via: redesignrelated). This is a little unfortunate. I don’t see how the name ‘Syfy’ is any less geekier than Sci-Fi? I would like to think that over the last ten years, we’ve moved on from the 90’s geek stereotype anyway? But I’m sure there’s a bunch of ‘research’ to suggest that we haven’t right? So my question - what about all the fantastic work DixonBaxi did a couple of years ago? That stuff was fucking hot, not to mention inspired. It was an approach that embraced the concept of ‘the strange’ and thinking differently, rather than pure geekery. I would hate to see all of that go. Fuck back NBC.

Really?.. this is disappointing. While I’d love to see SciFi get more viewers, I’m not liking the idea of their rebrand.
